Weeks of March 14-25, 2011

Sharing our American Hero Projects

It was fun to get together with Ms. Landefeld's first graders and share our reports on our American Heroes. We paired up with other students who studied the same hero and compared our reports. We were amazed at how much the same they were and excited to learn something new! We also performed our reader's theater production about the Wright Brothers.

Survey Says!

Collecting data and analyzing it has been a focus for us during Math Workshop. We especially like using clipboards when asking our survey question!

Mystery Reader

Our latest Mystery Reader brought some old favorites like Dr. Seuss and introduced us to new favorites too!

All About Books

We are becoming experts on a subject that we know lots about and writing all about it. When we are finished our books will have lots of the non-fiction text features such as a table of contents, chapters, diagrams and glossaries.

Week of March 7 - 11, 2011

Love Notes for the Homeless

We continue to enjoy making "love notes" to go with sandwiches that A-SPAN delivers to our homeless neighbors in Arlington each month. Last month we made hearts and this month we decorated shamrocks. We have heard that these notes are very special to their recipients and they look forward to receiving them each month.

Practice Makes Perfect

To prepare for our American Hero presentations, we practiced reading our reports together and we were completely in charge of making the props and scenery for our play.

American Hero Research Project

W had a grand finale to our American Hero Research Project on Friday. Over the course of the past month, we have been learning about American Heroes in our social studies textbook and becoming experts on our own American Hero. We started with researching our hero as part of homework with our parents. Then we used our research to make a book about our hero which we presented on Friday. Additionally, we performed a short play about the Wright brothers. This project enabled us to use many skills across the content areas. We read, wrote and drew about our hero during Language Arts; wrote an acrostic poem about our hero; used our math skills and creative imaginations in making the scenery and props for the play and our computer skills for research and creating the cover for our reports. Everyone did a fantastic job and we especially appreciate the support of the parents during the research process and for attending our exhibit!

New Math Unit!

We started a new math unit this week tht focuses on data analysis and sorting and describing shapes by their attributes. We will use the surveys that the children did for homework last week in our Morning Message in the coming week.

Mystery Readers

Our Mystery Readers brought one of our favorites this week: Fly Guy!

Weeks of February 22-March 2, 2011

Croaky and Ms. Zecher

Croaky has the best life! He has been traveling, attending birthday parties, going trick-or-treating, ice skating, playing sports and hanging out watching movies(appropriately rated of course) with us all year long. He spent the weekend with Ms. Zecher and got a new bandanna to wear!

Mystery Reader

Our last Mystery Reader brought two books with an ocean theme. She was generous to leave our favorite one in the classroom so we could reread it during the week. Thanks you!

Fruit Salad from the Ikkinasti Jungle

One of our favorite times of the school day is when we have our chapter book read aloud. After quiet reading time and before Writing Workshop we have a snack and read a chapter. We just finished David Eliot's "Evangeline Mudd and the Golden-Haired Apes of the Ikkinasti Jungle." At the end of the book there is a recipe for a fruit salad that we tried. Part of the recipe's directions is that you have to eat it with your fingers (like the golden-haired apes)for it to taste right. We did and it was delicious!

4th of July in March?

During social studies last week we learned about three important American holidays and when and why we celebrate them: Columbus Day, President's Day and Independence Day. We had a popsicle party in honor of these three holidays. We agreed that popsicles are good no matter what time of year we eat them!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday throughout the day on March 2. We learned that when Dr. Seuss was having trouble thinking about what to write next, he put on a silly hat. We made hats for ourselves for Writing Workshop to try out his idea and found that it really works! We ended our day by reading Dr. Seuss books with the entire school! For the last half hour of the day all grades dropped everything and read together.
